The Minnesota River west of Interstate 35W to the border of Savage and north of State Highway 13 is an asset that a treasure that is Burnsville's next frontier for redevelopment. During Partnership for Tomorrow, this area was identified for redevelopment and to capture this jewel for the enjoyment of the citizens of Burnsville and visitors. Since 1998 discussions with the property owners have been taking place, public hearing have occurred and the rezoning of this 1700 acres have already taken place. In January of 2008 we were finally successful in receiving enabling legislation to create a special Tax Increment Financing District in the 1700 acre site, after many years of submitting a bill before the legislature.
Now is the time to begin setting the table and begin the invitation to businesses and developers to take a look at Burnsville and allow the private sector to help us fulfill our vision and dream for the northern gateway to our City.
The vision is to create public amenities along the river with trails that would span the river front and to have parks for our citizens to enjoy a different experience in our city along the river. In the rezoning of the 1700 acre site the vision is to have mixed use development on the east side close to Interstate 35W and around the 340 acre lake that is going to be created once the quarrying activity concludes. A business park focusing on medical technology and the biosciences and as we move towards the west the zoning is for light industrial and than heavy industrial close to Savage and the Port of Savage.
Sustainable and energy efficient practices are contemplated for this area.
